A Foray Into Bread Baking

The little lady that resides here eats a peanut butter and honey sandwich everyday for lunch. Since she's consuming so much bread I got tired of shelling out upwards of $5 per loaf. Crazy! I could easily make a loaf or two a week, thus cutting down our grocery bill, and controlling the quality at the same time. So I've been "auditioning" bread loaves to see what will become my weekly standard. Last week I made a Semolina Loaf. Well, I attempted to make a 100% Semolina Loaf; but I didn't buy enough Semolina flour. So I added a bit of wheat. Then I realized that I didn't have any olive oil, so I subbed some melted butter. The results? Surprisingly really good, especially given the fact that I had to sub so many ingredients. Tasty, soft crumb and the little lady ate it right up. So good in fact, that I want to try it again with all of the correct ingredients!

See that little bit of yellow in there? That's the Semolina Flour, pretty isn't it?

Wait, who's that? Checkin' to make sure I'm doing it right?

Add the melted butter and some warm water.

Mix it all up, until a dough forms. Really, much easier than you think.

Knead it for ten minutes. This is the nicest dough I've ever worked with, nice and supple.

Now let it sit and rise until double in size. The picture for this would have been really boring,
good thing I forgot to take it.

Flatten it out, roll it up and stick it in a greased loaf pan to rise a bit more.

And there it is in all of it's brown and crumby glory. Looks delicious, doesn't it?
Oh, and it is!

Glad you approve Little Miss.

  2. That looks sooo good! I use Artisan Bread in 5 Minutes a Day. So easy and so good! Where is your recipe from? I'd love to try it.

  3. Here's the recipe I basically used. I think I used 1c of Whole Wheat flour instead of the entire of Semolina. Let me know how it turns out!

Now You See Me, Later You Won't

Although I've been away from this space for quite some time I was surprised to see that people were still reading it.  Go me!  So, although I am not going to be blogging in this space for much longer, I'm going to leave it up for the time being.  If nothing else as a way for people to find me in my next space. Next space you say?  Yes, I'm moving.  When I started this blog things were very different from what they are now.  I thought we were moving abroad much sooner, I was not going to school and there were no definite plans for a second baby.  That being said, the last few months I felt like I was not able to really be comfortable in this space.  So I'm opting to move someplace else, under a different blog name and start again.  I really hope that you will move over with me; I've so enjoyed having you along for the ride! So, sometime soon I will post about my new digs.  As soon as I find the time to put something up over...

A Giveaway, A Giveaway!

Well fellow inter-friends, I was going to post today about my experience with the Wii Fit. However, upon looking at my post number I realized that today was post #95. Which means that I get to announce the nifty little giveaway I have planned for post #100. Giveaway you say? Oh yes, just keep reading folks. I'm not going to get too introspective and sentimental today. After all, I have to leave myself something to write for the hundredth post. I'm excited that I made it this far. When I started out I really, really hoped that I'd actually write in this space and feel motivated enough to keep writing here. And I do! I like having something to do everyday that is for me, and really (sorry to disappoint you) only me. We can discuss this at more length next week, when I've actually made it to one hundred. So, the details. I want to know more about who you are. Yes, you! The people that come and read my stuff everyday. Or every week. Heck, if you're just pa...

Lady in the Sky, With Broccoli

We've had a whirlwind, chaotic, hectic, exciting week.  It was a week of fixes, car naps, quick meals and heat.  Oh, the heat!  I finally feel like today we had the chance to tone things down and take a breath.  The Little Lady and I were left to our devices for the evening while the Mr. took a much deserved night off.  We had a light dinner and then went outside for our favorite pre-bed activity, Bubble Chasing.  (Well, she chases, I blow).  The following conversation ensued. Laying in the grass: MP: Hey LL, look at all those clouds! LL:  Yeah mom, clouds. MP:  What do you see up there?  I see bunny ears! LL:  They just puffy mama. MP: (Humph, this might not work...) LL:  Mama, I see Lady! MP: (Getting excited)  That's great, what's she doing? LL:  Lady in Sky, with Broccoli.  I like Broccoli! MP: Well, yes, it does look like broccoli.  What else do you see? LL:  Poop in a glass.  Ha...
